What is In-vitro Fertilisation (IVF)?

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) where sperm and an egg are fertilised outside of the human body. IVF is a complex process that involves retrieving eggs from ovaries and manually combining them with sperm in a lab for fertilisation. Several days after fertilisation, the fertilized egg (now called an embryo) is placed inside a uterus. Pregnancy occurs when this embryo implants itself into the uterine wall. A successful pregnancy can be confirmed about two weeks later.

What happens during the process (IVF)?

IVF is a process, with each IVF cycle occuring with one menstrual cycle.

  • Blood test: You will have a blood test on day one of your menstrual cycle.
  • Hormone stimulation: Your hormone stimulation treatment will start on day 2 or 3 of your menstrual cycle. You will then start taking medicine to stimulate your follicles to allow them to produce eggs.
  • Trigger shot: Once your eggs have reached a certain size, you will then give yourself an injection that containing hormones that trigger the ovary to mature and to release an egg.
  • Egg retrieval: 36 hours after the trigger shot, the fertility specialist will use a thin needle inserted in your vagina wall into the follicles to retrieve the eggs (collected).
  • Semen sample: Semen sample will be collected on the same day of the egg collection.
  • Fertilisation: In an IVF cycle, we put the sperm and egg(s) together in a carefully labelled and electronically tagged dish. Sometimes, we inject each egg individually with a single sperm. This is called intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection or ICSI.
  • Embryo transfer: Eggs that have fertilised are called embryos. We will transfer embryos to your womb 3 or 5 days after fertilisation. During embryo transfer, we put the best 1 or 2 embryos into your womb. If the remaining embryos are suitable, we will freeze them for future use.
  • Pregnancy test: After the embryo is transferred, you need to take the test 16 days after your egg collection. We tell you the date at your embryo transfer.

What is Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)?

For married couples who are having problems conceiving, the cause of infertility is sperm-related. ICSI is the most common and successful treatment for male infertility. In intra-Cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), a single healthy sperm is injected directly into each mature egg. ICSI is often used when semen quality or number is a problem or if fertilisation attempts during prior In-vitro fertilisation (IVF) cycles failed.

Who should consider fertility treatment?

In Singapore, IVF treatment is only available for married couples. It is recommended to seek help from a fertility specialist if you have been trying for 12 months (or 6 months if you are over 35 years old), or married couples with any of the conditions shown below:
