Obstetrics

Congratulations on your pregnancy!  Antenatal care refers to the care of pregnant mothers receive from an obstetrician throughout the course of their pregnancy.

Antenatal Care

Antenatal care is designed to check and monitor the mother’s health while assessing for anything that could affect the growing baby. At each visit, your urine, blood pressure and weight gain will be checked to ensure they are within the parameters.

Your antenatal visits will depend on your individual needs. In general, women are required to undergo between eight to ten visits until they deliver their baby, while others may require additional to monitor the well-being of mother and baby.

Obstetrics Screening

Our obstetricians will also examine your abdomen to ascertain the position and size of the baby. In the later weeks of pregnancy, your baby’s heartbeat will also be detected using ultrasound. The assessment also involves the following blood tests:

  • A full blood count to exclude anaemia (low blood count which leaves you tired and less able to cope if you lose too much blood during or after the birth) and thalassaemia (a common genetic blood disorder in Singapore)
  • Blood grouping in the event a blood transfusion would be required
  • Hepatitis and syphilis screening
  • Rubella antibody screening (optional) to establish a history of exposure to this infection
  • An HIV screening as the implications on your baby may be significant should this infection be present

Our Pretnatal Care

Pre-Pregnancy counseling is an essential aspect of prenatal care. A planned pregnancy has an overall better outcome compared to an unplanned one. The pre-pregnancy consult aims to optimize your health, address modifiable risk factors and provide education about a healthy pregnancy. Both you and your spouse should attend, and some of the tests are routine for every pregnancy to assess your risk.

Labour & delivery

During your antenatal visits, your obstetrician will discuss your birth plan. In most cases, normal vaginal deliveries are planned. Still, some patients will require Caesarean section or even early delivery.

Our specialists are very experienced in managing high-risk pregnancies in the labour ward.

  • Vaginal deliveries
  • Caesarian section
  • Early delivery
  • Pain management during labour

Postnatal Care

We understand that after birth, the mothers will continue to require care for themselves. After your delivery, we will review your recovery progression and guide you if you have any problems with breastfeeding and family planning.
