HPV Screening
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a common virus that can cause cervical cancer. Regular HPV screening helps detect precancerous cells, allowing for early treatment and preventing cancer.
What is HPV?
HPV is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) with many different types. Some types are harmless, causing common warts. However, certain types, known as “high-risk” HPV, are linked to various cancers, including cervical, anal, vaginal, vulvar, and oropharyngeal cancers. The most common high-risk types are HPV 16 and HPV 18.

Frequent Q&A
There are two main types of HPV screening tests:
- HPV DNA test: This test directly detects the DNA of high-risk HPV types in a sample of cervical cells. It can be used as a primary screening test or in combination with a Pap test.
- Pap test (Pap smear): This test examines cervical cells for abnormal changes that may indicate precancerous or cancerous conditions. While not directly detecting HPV, it can identify cellular abnormalities caused by HPV infection. it is often performed alongside an HPV DNA test.
Screening recommendations vary depending on age and individual risk factors. Generally, screening is recommended for women aged 25-65, with the specific test and frequency determined by guidelines and individual circumstances. Women with a history of abnormal pap tests may require more frequent screening. Screening may also be considered for individuals with a higher risk of HPV-related cancers, such as those with HIV or a history of organ transplantation.
HPV screening involves a simple procedure performed by our specialists. During a pelvic exam, a sample of cervical cells is collected using a small brush or spatula. This sample is then sent to a laboratory for testing.
